History Of Coastal Carolina University

History Of Coastal Carolina University

Coastal Carolina University was founded as Coastal Carolina Junior College on July 23rd, 1954. The school came from the idea of a group of citizens who met in the Horry County Memorial Library to discuss the creation of a local college. The group later became a nonprofit organization known as “the Coastal Educational Foundation, Inc.”

Under the leadership of Edward Woodhouse, the director of Coastal Carolina Junior College, the school opened its first day of classes on September 20th, 1954, as a branch of the College of Charleston. Coastal Carolina Junior College started with 53 students taught by part-time teachers for half an hour to one hour each day. The school’s first full-time faculty member was hired in 1955, and the first permanent building on campus, Galloway Hall, opened in 1956.

In 1958, Coastal Carolina Junior College became an independent institution when the college of Charleston discontinued its extension program. The name of the school was changed to Coastal Carolina College. In the 1960s, the Coastal Educational Foundation purchases 1,500 acres of land for the college’s future development.

The 1960s were a time of significant changes for Coastal Carolina College. For instance, in 1961, the school held a major fundraising drive that generated over $300,000 for construction. Also, Coastal’s first intercollegiate athletics basketball game between Coastal College and USC Florence was held. In 1962, Coastal College moved to its first building, Edward M. Singleton Building, with over 110 students.
